As India gears up for the highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a crucial home ODI series against England serves as their final preparation. However, one major concern remains—Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness update.
Bumrah’s Fitness: Will He Be Ready for the Champions Trophy?
Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah sustained a back spasm during India’s last Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. Although he has been included in India’s Champions Trophy squad, doubts persist about his participation in the marquee tournament.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma addressed the uncertainty surrounding Bumrah’s fitness ahead of the first ODI against England in Nagpur.
“Jasprit, obviously we’re waiting on some update about his scan, which is due to happen in the next few days,” Rohit stated.
While the team management remains hopeful, Rohit emphasized the need for medical confirmation before making any decisions.
“We’re just waiting on that update, which is going to happen in the next few days. Then, probably, we’ll have more clarity about his participation in the last ODI,” he added.
Initially, Bumrah was expected to feature in the third ODI against England, but Varun Chakravarthy has now replaced him in the 16-member squad.
Varun Chakravarthy Gets His ODI Call-Up
Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who impressed during the recent T20I series against England, has been rewarded with a spot in the ODI squad. The spinner grabbed 14 wickets in five T20I matches, proving his ability to deceive top-tier batsmen.
Rohit praised the newcomer’s skills, stating:
“I understand that his success has come in T20 cricket, but he clearly brings something different. This series gives us a chance to test him and see how he fits into the setup.”
While his inclusion in the Champions Trophy squad is not confirmed yet, Rohit acknowledged that Chakravarthy would be under close observation.
“Right now, we’re not thinking about whether we’re going to take him (for Champions Trophy) or not, but he definitely will be in contention if he performs well.”
Mohammed Shami’s Return Bolsters India’s Bowling Attack
A major boost for Team India ahead of the England series is the return of Mohammed Shami. The veteran pacer, who was the leading wicket-taker in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, has successfully recovered from his injury and made a comeback in the recent T20I series against England.
Though Shami picked up only three wickets in two matches, Rohit Sharma remains confident in his abilities.
“He has been playing for over 10-12 years and has delivered for the team on multiple occasions. You look at the World Cup, and how he bowled then—it speaks for itself.”
Shami also participated in India’s domestic season, ensuring he stays match-ready for the upcoming international tournaments.
