Australia’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have hit another hurdle, with star pacer Mitchell Starc officially ruled out of the tournament due to personal reasons.
The two-time Champions Trophy winners had already suffered key losses with Pat Cummins (ankle), Josh Hazlewood (hip), and Mitch Marsh (back) sidelined due to injuries. Additionally, the sudden retirement of Marcus Stoinis earlier this month forced selectors to make major adjustments to the squad.

To compensate for these setbacks, five new players have been added to the 15-player squad for the tournament. The inclusions are:

Veteran batter Steve Smith will captain the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, who remains unavailable due to injury.
Selectors Support starc’s Decision
While the exact reason for Starc’s withdrawal remains undisclosed, Australia’s selection chairman, George Bailey, confirmed that the pacer had the full backing of the team.

Additionally, Adam Zampa will remain the team’s frontline spinner, supported by Glenn Maxwell’s part-time spin.
Group Stage Fixtures and Preparations
Australia is placed in Group B, alongside England, Afghanistan, and South Africa. Their first match is set against England on February 22.
Before the tournament begins, the team will warm up with two ODI matches against Sri Lanka in Colombo this week.
